North Island Roadie, Waikite Valley / Hobbitton

our best day yet

Waikite Valley is just awesome. We had a lovely time the night before, parked up with about half a dozen other vans and then this morning we got up very early about 6 and went back to the pools. large_IMG_4987.JPGlarge_f73ff890-b420-11eb-ab30-6339bf0053c9.jpglarge_IMG_4962.jpg
It was special to just move between the pools with hardly anyone else around. By about 7.30 other campers were arriving for a morning soak. There is a walk to Te Manaroa spring that we then decided to take. large_2b3f6ef0-b421-11eb-99dc-233f6e077a2d.jpg
Talking to 2 people-from Marlborough Sounds, when Sal notices the woman’s eyes glazing over and she fainted in front of us. Thank goodness for Sals’ nursing expertise as she would have landed very heavily on the concrete.

Walking up to the source of the hot springs is like another world-we think we have seen our own pink and white terraces. Very very gorgeous.

Drove back into Rotorua and parked by the Government Gardens. We unloaded our bikes and rode around the lake front through the geothermal area. We have done that before but it is one of our favourite tracks and today didn’t disappoint and we did sections that we hadn’t covered before.

Sal then phoned the Hobbiton people in Matamata to see if we could get on one of their tours. She thought we could get on the last one for the day starting at 3. So a quick lunch then on the move again towards Matamata. It is beautiful lush green countryside and different from where we have been.

The tour was so well done and Sonny our tour guide was brilliant . We finished with a cider at the Green Dragon pub, then to find a place to park for the night.
We have opted for a POP just down the road with drop dead gorgeous countryside views over the panorama below.
