North Island Roadie, Raglan to Otorohanga

Raglan to Otorohanga

stormy, wind, rain, sun

The weather today has definitely been notable. Driving from where we started the day with an early morning swim, then it was on the road again. We’d decided to visit Raglan as neither of us had been there. Enroute the sky was incredibly black, then we had driving down rain followed by sunshine again. This pattern kept up for most of the day.

We stopped in Hamilton for stocking up on supplies. We took the back roads and that is much less stressful. Drove through dairy country which is incredibly green. I was surprised how pretty Hamilton was as I had only heard negative and disparaging comments.

The weather in Raglan was dismal. We visited a few shops at the wharf then went to Wainui Reserve overlooking the Raglan Surf Life Saving Club for lunch.
The wind was buffeting the van around and it stirred up the sea hugely. We then drove to Whale Bay and watched someone on a windsurfer in huge waves.

Driving back from Raglan we had to wait a short while while a tree blown down across the road was dealt too. I noticed that there was really nice native planting along riparian waterways that had been done by the Waikato River Authority. When we turned off toward Otorohanga we drove through very affluent looking horse country with massive mansions.

parked up tonight at the NZMCA with about 10 over vans.
